Taraji P. Henson Talks On Narrating the ‘Going To Mars’ Documentary and Meeting Nikki Giovanni

Taraji P. Henson talked on ‘Going To Mars’ Doc and Nikki Giovanni and opens up about narrating the documentary and to meet Nikki Giovanni.

Taraji started by saying, “We had to find a happy medium. When you take on Nikki’s poems – and because [the film] is about her, it needed to sound like her.”

She added, “It needed to feel like her. When she reads her words, it’s almost conversational. Because for her, it’s a matter of fact. It is what it is. There is no performance to it.”

She continued, “I was a little nervous [to meet her]. She doesn’t suffer fools lightly. But what I could tell is that she liked me. It was like, phew, I passed that test.”

Henson finished by saying, “I think there was an understanding of the sisterhood support. Because she’s who she is and then we’re doing this documentary about her, and then I am who I am in the industry and what I do as an artist, and I can lend my voice to help lift up her project. And that’s what it’s all about. And I think there was a sense of pride there from both of us.”
