Donald Glover criticized the BET Awards for awarding him the same accolades as white musician Sam Smith.
The awards show, which celebrates Black entertainers and other minorities, took place in Los Angeles and featured performances by Will Smith, who Glover pointed out has fewer Grammys than he does.
Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, expressed his frustration at the event’s lack of recognition for Black artists. “It doesn’t really make sense,” Glover continued. “I have more Grammys than Will Smith, which makes no sense, but I have the same amount of BET awards as Sam Smith.”
Despite the controversy, Glover later joined other artists in paying tribute to Usher and received an award at the ceremony.
