![]() 12th Grade Healthcare Science/Pre-Med John L. LeFlore Magnet High School Mobile, AL“One example that I can give to show you that she is a phenomenal teacher is by one of the acts of kindness that she recently did for her students. Ms. Shelton’s students had been preparing all school year to enter into the Alabama State Competitive Events in Montgomery which was held in February. The day before they were to leave, they got terrible news from the school system that they would not be able to go and participate because of inclement weather that was coming to the northern part of Alabama and they thought that it would be too risky to travel with the students and teachers. The students were heartbroken. Ms. Shelton felt like she had to do something for her students. This information was shared with her principal and the district’s MCPSS Commissioner. After the Commissioner made phones callsto the state department and the approval from her principal, Ms. Shelton decided that she would go herself. She asked another HOSA Advisor and teacher at LeFlore to go along with her. They entered two of the categories for the students. The students had prepared a scrapbook outlining all of the activities that they had done this school year that would set them apart from other schools and HOSA programs in the state. It was outstanding and the judges agreed. Ms. Shelton returned with a surprise for her students, they had won the state recognition as ‘The Outstanding HOSA Chapter’ for the state of Alabama and will be traveling to Anaheim, CA in June to compete for national recognition.” Nominated by Robert Battles |
