DR. VALERIE SMITH “Whether it was for a person to succeed or to simply put a smile on their face, Dr. Smith made it her priority to do all that she could for the bettering of those around her. At a young age, Dr. Smith showed the love and compassion that it took to become a leader and educator and this parlayed into her beginning her educational journey into becoming a teacher. She believed in the values of education and exceeding typical expectations while challenging her peers to reach their maximum potential in all that they do.” |
SHERYL THOMAS “My name is Alexandria Moore. I am 23 years old. I have Down syndrome. When I started at Theodore High School in 2006, Coach Sheryl Thomas was my Physical Education teacher. Once I graduated, I continued my participation with Coach for different activities. I still wanted the involvement and camaraderie that Coach’s’ events provided, and she wouldn’t have had it any other way. For the past 10 years Coach Thomas has managed, organized and coached 40-45 Special Olympic athletes from Mobile County as they travel to Troy, AL for State Special Olympics Games. Serving as the Special Olympics Coordinator is all voluntary for Coach Thomas. She receives no extra compensation. Coach has helped us achieve our optimum potential in the environment in which we live. Everyone that comes in contact with her learns simplicity, patience, tolerance, and how to “think outside the box”. Coach Thomas is a dedicated teacher, but she is also a selfless person, whom I adore. She is the ‘wind beneath our wings’!” |

Teacher is defined as a person who teaches or instructs, especially as a profession; instructor. Her eagerness to assist her students, love and passion for teaching her student’s is unmistakable throughout the building of C.L. Scarborough Middle School. Phenomenal Teacher is a just simple way to describe Ms. Williams. She mastered the intangible that are of being firm but fair, having rules yet allowing her students to understand that she is not only their teacher but she cares about them.
